More damage at cemeteryHEARTLESS vandals have targeted Enfield's Hertford Road Cemetery again. The vandals went on the rampage between May 10 and May 14 smashing a large fence to pieces and spraying offensive graffiti on headstones and cemetery signposts. The incident, which is the fourth act of vandalism to hit the cemetery in the past few weeks, has been slammed by the council as 'sickening'. The council, which has reported the incidents to the police on many occasions, are now working with the police in an effort to catch the culprits. A council spokesperson said: "We are giving the police all the assistance they need to catch whoever is doing this. "It is sickening to think someone out there would stoop to wrecking areas of the cemetery, a place where people like to come and remember their loved ones in a peaceful and attractive environment. "This type of behaviour is not only disrespectful but mindless too. There is just no excuse." But Highway Ward Cllr Bill Price believes catching the vandals will be a tough job. He said: "I am constantly ringing the police about vandals in the area but they just don't have the resources to monitor what is happening all the time. "There has been a history of vandalism in the cemetery for years. I have even known graves to be desecrated. These vandals just take it upon themselves to vandalise anything in sight." 10:27 Thursday 30th May 2002
