Bogus callers leave empty handed

By Loughton Guardian

POLICE have praised the actions of a pensioner who thwarted two bogus workmen when they called at his home in Lower Road, Loughton.

The 87yearold man was at home last Thursday when two men knocked at the door posing as water officials.

They said they had been working in a nearby street and needed to check his supply.

The man asked them for identification which they said they did not have.

Police believe the conmen then became "very pushy" with their intended victim so he let them in.

One went into the kitchen and turned the taps on while the other man stood by the front door.

During the visit the elderly man told them he was going to sit because he felt unwell and one of the men asked him if he had a pension book.

He told them he did not have one and they left empty handed.

Crime reduction officer Carol Staff said: "Initially he did everything right and even tried to ask them for identification. But because they were very pushy with him he was probably intimidated into letting them in."

The men were white, one in his late teens, 5ft 8ins tall wearing a blue and red checked shirt with blue trousers. The other was aged between 30 and 40 and of medium build.

Any information to Loughton police station on 020 8502 3881.
