Officer attacked after crashA POLICE officer required 50 stitches to his face after being attacked following a fatal road crash near Stansted aiport on Saturday morning. The 23-year-old officer, from the Braintree area, was allegedly slashed across his left cheek shortly after 8am while helping colleagues set up road closures near the scene of the collision in Mole Hill Green. He was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow for treatment and is now recovering at home. A police spokesman said the officer, who has not been named, was "slowly beginning to come to terms with his ordeal". A 24-year-old Frenchman was arrested and has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Karl Canawy, of no fixed address, appeared before Harlow magistrates on Monday. The crash happened shortly after 6am when a green Land Rover and a silver Vauxhall Corsa car collided on Elsenham Road, near Waltham Hall. The 32-year-old Land Rover driver, from Scunthorpe, was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital with head injuries. The car driver, a 61-year-old man from Elsenham, was certified dead at the scene.
