Arrests made as police target car crime
SUSPECTED car thieves were targeted in a series of police raids in the Harlow area. Teams of officers sprung into action in the early hours of Monday and Tuesday, carrying out numerous raids on dozens of houses and flats in the town. The raids were part of Operation Relentless aimed at arresting those wanted in relation to autocrime and burglary. Officers carried out raids in February and these were the second lot to be executed as part of the operation. Also out on the streets of Harlow was the automatic number plate reader, which reads the plates of passing cars to see if they are stolen or wanted for other reasons. The operation was run countywide and was followed up with a series of public initiatives to encourage people to make their cars less thief-friendly. Other tactics used include letters being sent to known criminals to advise them that they are known to the police and they should change their behaviour. Police also held community safety roadshows in various town centres, including Harlow, to promote car safety and later this week officers will be sent out to patrol known car crime hotspots. Two people were arrested. 10:48 Monday 29th July 2002
