Burglars take £2,500 from 95-year-old police widow

By Leyton and Leytonstone Guardian

A POLICE widow and her 72-year-old daughter were the victims of burglars who fled with more than £2,500.

Two men with Irish accents, posing as water company officials, entered the house of 95-year-old Elsie Lovell in Leytonstone at around 11.45am Thursday.

The woman was in the back room of the house at the time while her daughter dealt with the men.

While one of the men managed to distract the 72-year-old, the other found the bag containing £2,500. The two men then fled from the house.

The policeman leading the investigation, PC Nadeem Bashir, has now started a collection within the force to try to recoup some of the money for Mrs Lovell and her daughter.

He said: "I feel very upset by this incident. How anyone can take money off a 95-year-old woman I do not know."

The burglars were both aged between 30 and 40.

The incident is one of a spate of "burglary artifices" in the borough over the past week and police are keen to get to the bottom of this ever-growing crime.

If anyone has any information, they should contact Leyton police on 8529 8666.
