Bogus builders target 82–year–oldBy Loughton GuardianAN 82yearold Alzheimer's sufferer was robbed of £60 by bogus builders who called at his flat in Felstead Road, Loughton, on Friday. The caller said there was a problem with his roof which needed fixing and that he would call back later. Immediately after the visit the man telephoned his niece in north London and she advised him not to let anyone in should they return. However the man did let the caller in when he returned shortly before noon. Loughton crime reduction officer Carol Staff said the man returned with one or possibly two accomplices but because of the victim's confused state he was unable to say how many or give descriptions. The niece rang her uncle and spoke to one of the conmen who said he had carried out roof repairs costing £60. She told the man to leave and said she was coming over. The crooks took the money from the man's wallet before pushing past him and ran out the front door. Mrs Staff urged people to never have work carried out by people who could call. "Only use firms which come with either a personal recommendation or are recognised building contractors," she said. 11:44 Thursday 1st August 2002
