Crimestoppers calls lead to four times more arrests
By Epping GuardianCALLS to Crimestoppers led to the arrest of over 40 people in the first half of the year, more than four times the number in the previous six months. The 421 actionable calls also led to the recovery of £3.75m worth of stolen property and drugs. These increases reflect the determination of the Essex Crimestoppers Board to promote the scheme, in which callers to the freephone number, 0800 555 111, can give information anonymously and earn a Crimestoppers cash award. Essex Police has supported Crimestoppers by printing the logo on outgoing mail and showing the logo and telephone number on police vehicles and the ceilings of police cells. Inspector Ewen Wilson, of Essex Police's community safety department, said: "Criminals should not underestimate the effectiveness of Crimestoppers. The results that have been achieved so far this year prove that the Crimestoppers number works and that it provides a confidential route for information to be passed to the police." 11:48 Thursday 1st August 2002
