Police step up fight against gun crimeBy Haringey IndependentATTEMPTS are being made to halt gun and violent crime in the borough. Police are hoping that the Crimestoppers initiative will help do this and will be promoting the phoneline along with Haringey Council. Borough commander Chief Spt Stephen James said: "The statistics cause us great concern. We go to firearms incidents in Haringey three or four times a day. "We need to stop these shootings and we need to stop these guns. If we don't deal with it now what's it going to be like in two or three years time?" Crimestoppers area manager Liz Manning appealed to the black community to call anonymously at a meeting of community leaders at the civic centre last week. She said: "All callers want to know is they won't be found out for ringing. In 14 years not one caller has ever been compromised, not one caller had their phone number traced or their name asked." From now on, all council and police vehicles wil display the Crimestoppers phone number in a bid to raise awareness. Community leader Pastor Nims Obunge added: "Crimestoppers is one answer. It is a community resource and it does work. "It is safe, nobody goes to court except the criminal, calls are totally anonymous and anonymity is never compromised." 12:42 Thursday 1st August 2002
