Bingo woman robbed

By Enfield Independent

A PENSIONER was brutally attacked for £30 as she returned home from bingo.

The 79-year-old, who does not want to be named, sustained a broken nose, shoulder, hip, pelvis and ribs after the attack which happened in an alleyway near Brook House, just a few yards from Edmonton police station.

She was discovered lying face down by a resident and was taken to North Middlesex Hospital where her condition was described as serious but stable.

The victim had taken the 279 bus home with her friend after the mini-cab they had booked failed to pick them up.

She was attacked sometime between 10.30pm and 11pm after getting off the bus outside the police station in Fore Street.

Her attacker escaped with her handbag containing the cash and bingo cards.

Police are keen to trace a white man believed to be in his late teens to early 20s who was seen walking along Plevna Road shortly before the attack.

He was wearing a white jacket with blue edging and a white and blue baseball cap.

They also want to trace a group of youths who were seen outside Edmonton police station and an Asian couple, spotted at the corner of the junction with Plevna Road and Fore Street.

DC Paul Cheadle said: "This was a despicable attack on an extremely frail lady who has to walk with the aid of a walking stick.

"The person responsible may not have realised how seriously this lady has been hurt and may well wish to hand themselves in. I would ask anyone who knows anything to get in touch."

The victim's bingo companion said: "If the mini cab had turned up we wouldn't have been in this situation. She is a very friendly person and this has really knocked her back."

Anyone with information should call the crime desk at Edmonton on 8345 4441 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
