Cashpoint thieves strike

By Haringey Independent

POLICE are on the look-out for a gang of cashpoint thieves operating around the borough.

Officers this week released CCTV shots of the crooks operating outside the Halifax bank in High Road, Tottenham.

The thieves work by inserting a plastic loop into the card slot of a cash machine, which is not clearly noticeable when inserting your cashcard.

When someone puts their card in and enters their PIN number, it does not work and one of the thieves, usually standing close by, tells them they have to enter it three times.

This still does not work and, when they cannot get their card back, they go into the bank to get help and the thief takes out the card using the plastic loop and walks off with the card and PIN number.

Police highlighted the case of an elderly woman at the Halifax in Tottenham who was conned out of £300 by the gang using this method.

A police spokesman this week said: "We have a number of covert cameras around the borough focusing on places like this and these are pictures we have gained from these cameras.

"If you know these individuals, contact the police."

He added that this type of con has been an ongoing problem in the borough and that this gang has been involved in a number of similar crimes across Haringey. Police believe that there are four or five people in the gang.

If you recognise any of the con artists or have information on any cashpoint thieves, contact Tottenham police station on 8345 0763.
