Underpass muggingBy Walthamstow GuardianA DISTRAUGHT mother is appealing for witnesses to the violent mugging of her teenage son and his friend. The two schoolboys from Walthamstow, aged 12 and 13, were surrounded by eight to ten hooded youths in the Billet underpass, on Chingford Road, between 5.15pm and 5.20pm on Saturday. The two boys were repeatedly kicked and punched to the ground and were threatened at knifepoint by the ring leader, who demanded that they hand over everything they had. A mobile phone, Sony Walkman and two scream masks, which the boys had just bought for Halloween, were taken. The cowardly robbers tried to take the 12-year-old boy's trainers but he was kicking and screaming so much they were unable to take them off, his mum said. The boys were left shocked and shaken, but they were uninjured. The mum, from Walthamstow, said: "The boys are really frightened and the school has advised they be driven and picked up from school for at least a week. "There is a group of thieving boys in the area and I want to warn parents and children not to use the Billet road underpass and to use the overpass instead," said the worried mum. Police are currently looking at CCTV footage for any clues and are looking for the ring leader of the group who has been described as a 16-year-old mixed race boy, 5ft 8ins tall, with short black hair. He was wearing a nylon red zip-up jacket with silver stripes. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 020 8529 8666. 15:34 Monday 21st October 2002
