Massive drugs haulBy Enfield IndependentAN Enfield police chief this week told of the impact he believes a massive drugs haul in Enfield will have on crime in the borough. DI Dave McKelvey, who last week led one of the biggest ever drugs raids in the borough, uncovering millions of pounds worth of heroin, believes that the seizure will lead to falls in burglary and robbery. In the raid, officers from the Enfield crime squad stormed a building in Raynton Road at 3.30pm on Friday afternoon and, after conducting a search, found about 42 kilos of the drug believed to have a street value of around £10million. Speaking to the Independent yesterday, DI McKelvey said: "There is a significant relationship between burglary and robbery by drug addicts who are committing these offences to support their habits. "It will have a major impact because it has taken over 40 kilos of heroin out of circulation." Salim Tanay, 42, was arrested at the scene and taken to Edmonton police station where he was charged with possession with intent to supply heroin. He appeared at Enfield Magistrates Court on Monday and was remanded in custody until December 2, when he is due to reappear at the Enfield court for committal to Crown court. DI McKelvey yesterday said: "This is one of the biggest seizures of class-A drugs in Enfield. "The crime squad is trying to tackle drugs at every level. In Operation Swordfish earlier this year we took a lot of dealers off the street but this was at the top end of the scale." He said that the Enfield crime squad was committed to the fight against drugs and added: "It is an ongoing, continuous task. We are dedicated to dealing with drugs and drug suppliers in the borough at all levels." 09:51 Wednesday 6th November 2002
