Street shootingBy Leyton and Leytonstone GuardianA WOMAN was shot in the street on Tuesday, sparking an urgent police appeal for witnesses to come forward. At this stage of the investigation, police believe the 42-year-old woman was standing with her bicycle outside a house in Bloxhall Road, Leyton, just before 6.20pm when she was shot in the left leg. One eyewitness said the woman was shot by a motorist who had knocked her from her bicycle but investigating officers were unable to confirm this. Det Sgt Neil Lemon, one of the chief investigating officers, said the victim was still in a state of shock, on a high dose of medication, and had been unable to give police a full statement. "We are checking video footage from CCTV cameras, making door-to-door inquiries, and our forensic team has made a full search of the area," he said. Armed police from the S07 Shootings Team swarmed through the area, and a rapid response car was sent by the London Ambulance Service. Paramedics treated the woman at the scene. She was then taken to an undisclosed London hospital where her condition is said to be stable. Lawrence Barretts was at the scene minutes after the shooting. He said: "I saw the rapid response car, and six or seven armed response units police were everywhere. "I spoke to a woman who had stayed with the injured lady and comforted her until police arrived. This woman told me me she had been walking along the street with her husband. She heard a loud bang and saw the woman who had been shot lying on the ground." Officers cordoned off Bloxhall Road to allow a forensic team to make a fingertip search of the area. A police spokesman said: "The circumstances of the incident are not yet clear and there is no description of the suspect or suspects at this early stage. However, it appears the woman was approached from behind either by someone passing, or someone who may have been loitering." Police said they were keeping an open mind on the motive behind the attack but would like to speak to the driver of a dark vehicle seen driving away from the area towards Lea Bridge Road at the time of the shooting. Officers strongly urge this motorist to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact the S07 Shootings Team on 020 82177350, or if you wish to remain anonymous contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.A WOMAN was shot in the street on Tuesday, sparking an urgent police appeal for witnesses to come forward.
