Stab victim's appealBy Chingford GuardianA STABBING victim is urging witnesses to come forward after he was attacked on his doorstep on Saturday, just after midnight. Kevin Cole, 23, arrived home at The Croft, Chingford, after a night on the town with friends when his attacker stabbed him in the lower stomach, leaving him with a five-inch wound, which needed 20 stitches. The 23-year-old car salesman said: "It all happened so quickly. The man came at me and punched me in the face. I tried to hit him back but he then punched me in the stomach, or so I thought, but he had actually stabbed me. "I was told my injury was life-threatening, and if that police car hadn't gone by I would be dead as I had lost so much blood." He added: "I cannot think of any reason why someone would want to do this to me. I have lived in Chingford all my life, and I have never had any trouble before." Police believe the attacker may have been waiting for his victim in The Croft. Bleeding heavily, Mr Cole managed to flag down a passing police car on Friday Hill. Police immediately gave him life-saving medical aid and he was then taken to Whipps Cross Hospital. Mr Cole is now recovering at his parents' home. Investigating officer Det Sgt Mark Mills-Bishop said officers were not ruling out the possibility of the attack being a case of mistaken identity. "We are extremely concerned about this incident as it appears to be a motiveless attack and we are keeping an open mind. "Nothing was stolen from the young man and there is nothing in his background. It may have been a case of mistaken identity. "We are urgently seeking witnesses and we ask anyone who was in and around the Friday Hill area on Saturday night to come forward if they have information," he said. Police are looking for a slim white man who was wearing a dark parka coat with the hood up. Anyone with information should telephone DS Mills-Bishop on 8345 2347. 11:40 Thursday 23rd January 2003
