Gang shoot-out By Chingford GuardianRIVAL gangs started a violent, late night gunfight in a quiet Chingford road last week. Residents are living in fear after four shots were fired between two gangs in Flaxen Road at around 10.30pm on Monday, January 13. Police believe the incident began after a dark coloured VW Golf and a silver hatchback entered the dead-end road. As the cars turned to exit, the people inside exchanged insults with a gang of youths. After further arguments the two groups started shooting at each other. No one was injured but local people believe it is an ongoing turf war between young gang members and they are now worried someone will be back. It is believed one of the gangs came from Leyton. Police escorted families through the road during the following morning as special Trident officers, who investigate black-on-black crime, scoured the area. A resident, who asked not to be named, said: "We have managed to keep cool about it all but the police told us to be prepared for people to come back to finish the job. "We moved here about nine years ago and there has been a lot of trouble recently after the closure of the tower blocks. "This is apparently now one of the worst areas for crime in Chingford." Nobody has turned up to hospitals in the area with gunshot wounds, but bullet casings were found by police during a search of the area. Witnesses should call Trident officer DC MacPherson on 8733 4774. 11:43 Thursday 23rd January 2003
