Cops want number crunchersBy Walthamstow GuardianA UNIQUE new scheme creating a squad of expert accountants and making them special constables was unveiled this week at New Scotland Yard. The initiative will enable the Special Constabulary to draw on the forensic accounting skills of qualified professional accountants when investigating major financial crime. Det Ch Supt James Perry welcomed the new approach. He said: "This important scheme will not only mean that qualified accountants will be able to form part of the teams investigating major cases such as confidential government inquiries, computer crime, fraud and money laundering, but that as special constables they can fully participate in police interviews of suspects and undertake search warrants. "It will, I believe, greatly assist in the fight against serious crime." Accountants are being invited to a National Special Constabulary Weekend on February 21 to hear first hand about the new scheme. 07:33 Saturday 15th February 2003
