Pirate broadcaster finedBy Wanstead and Woodford GuardianA PIRATE radio promoter from Woodford Green has been convicted of producing advertisements for a pirate radio station. Kyri Marcou, 28, of Hillside Avenue, Woodford Green, pleaded guilty at Havering Magistrates Court of promoting and advertising the pirate station Passion FM. The court stated that: "By advertising Passion and associating it with events at particular clubs he made personal financial gain at the expense of licensed broadcasting stations." Mr Marcou was convicted under the Wireless and Telegraphy Act 1949 and fined £1,200 with £1,000 costs. Pirate radio broadcasts can lead to interference with radio communications of the emergency services and air traffic control. In 2002 the Agency successfully carried out 1042 operations against 209 pirate radio broadcasters and prosecuted 49 people arising from their involvement in pirate radio broadcasting. 11:03 Tuesday 25th February 2003
