Seven shootersSEVEN guns were handed into Ilford police station during the opening four days of the Get Guns off the Streets amnesty. The campaign being run by the police this month gives residents a chance to clean up the streets by surrendering their illegal firearms or knives. An Ilford police spokesman said: "The gun amnesty is going very well so far. From Monday to mid-Thursday we had seven firearms handed in and 282 bullets." Residents are being advised to hand in ball bearing guns, air weapons of any description and imitation firearms. There will be no recriminations against anyone handing over weapons. It comes as a result of growing concern over imitation guns and low-powered air weapons. They do not require a certificate but are increasingly being misused in the community. If you have a gun or weapon you wish to give up in the amnesty, take it to Ilford, Wanstead or Woodford police stations. 15:35 Wednesday 9th April 2003
