Bog standard Tories

By Enfield Independent

PLANS to re-open public toilets in the borough have gone down the pan.

The council's new Conservative administration has put the re-opening of public conveniences at Enfield Town and Turkey Street on ice while a review is carried out.

The move has been criticised by Labour, who had planned to begin a re-opening programme of Enfield's public toilets.

Labour leader Cllr Doug Taylor said: "We had put in place the finances to re-open the toilets something local people wanted.

"I believe the Tories simply aren't interested in responding particularly in eastern Enfield.

"However, I will continue to press them to make a U-turn on this issue and adopt the Labour view.

"There is now no financial reason to keep them closed I think it's pure bloody mindedness because we said that we would re-open them."

A total of seven public toilets were closed in the 1990s as part of a council cost-cutting exercise.

One was sold off at auction for £90,000 and converted into an office and the other six public toilets are currently not in use.

Under the Tories, Labour say that the re-opening of two of the toilets has been 'de-prioritised'.

A council spokeswoman said that the authority was considering re-opening the two toilets but no decision would be made until it had gone before the cabinet.

Officers are to discuss the viability of re-opening the facilities at Church Street which is leased by London Buses.
