Pulling no punches

Cllr Wendell Daniel
Cllr Wendell Daniel

ENFIELD councillor Wendell Daniel is getting ready to rumble after making an amazing move to bring world championship boxing to the borough.

The Enfield Independent can exclusively reveal that Cllr Daniel has contacted flamboyant American boxing promoter Don King and the British Boxing Board of Control in a bid to stage the on-off money-spinning mega bout between Hadley Wood's own Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson who hails from Catskill, New York.

Cllr Daniel is hoping to persuade King who made his name promoting the 1974 'Rumble in the Jungle' clash between Muhammed Ali and George Foreman to hold a similar open air summer extravaganza at Picketts Lock.

An excited Cllr Daniel declared: "Staging an outdoor international sporting event such as the 'Picketts Lock Punch Up' is an excellent opportunity to put this deprived area back on the political map."

The Lewis-Tyson clash has been dogged by controversy following an ugly brawl at a press conference which led to Tyson being refused a boxing licence in Nevada.

And Picketts Lock's name is etched in sporting folklore after the Government farcically scrapped plans for a national athletics arena on the site.

Cllr Daniel added: "I am calling on local political leaders to rebuild the credibility of the borough by promoting this location as a potential site for developing local talent and staging future international sporting events."
