Movie memories

By Stan Shaw

IN 1947 I was 13 years old. I remember walking from 'Samuel Lewis Flats' in Amherst Road, Hackney to the cinemas.

The Gaumont, Dalston Lane. The Odeon, Kingsland Road. The Savoy; and the re-run cinemas, Classic; Coloseum; Vouge; and Ambassadors.

If it rained we arrived wet. I came from a very clean and sophisticated family. We always changed our under wear and had a bath EVERY week, whether we needed it or not.

In the cinema we would keep our coats on our laps (no cloak rooms im those days).

Our outer clothes were not of washable materials and I don't think we ever sent anything to the dry cleaners.

The smell in the cinema must have been horrific, add to that the fact that EVERYBODY smoked.

If you went back in a time machine you would not be able to enter the place.
