Stonework returnsBy Epping GuardianPLANS are afoot to restore some of the balustrading which once graced the gardens of the Copped Hall mansion. During the last century some of the stonework was removed to Bullwood Hall women's prison and to Lord Rayleigh's estate, near Chelmsford, but has now been returned with the kind permission of the owners. Much of the balustrading was damaged during its retrieval and so the Copped Hall Trust and the Friends of Copped Hall held a 'Jigsaw Day' at the hall to prepare the stone work for repair before it is reinstated next to the north summerhouse. A work party started by sorting through two lots of balustrading and completed the 'jigsaw puzzle' by matching sections of the stonework. A number of complete balusters were assembled and placed in special containers to await repair by skilled professionals. The helpers were organised by Copped Hall trustees Gordon Brown and Alan Cox, and Friends chairman Sylvia Keith. The trust has been offered a grant of £2,500 by the Essex Heritage Trust towards the restoration of the balustrading, subject to the Copped Hall Trust matching the sum. The trust has launched a Balustrading Appeal to raise the money. Donations can be made. For more details, ring Denys Favre on 01992 573369. 12:13 Thursday 24th October 2002
