    Ryman League

Braintree Town

A club which began life in 1898, Braintree Town (known as the Iron after their early association with Crittalls iron window frames) played in the Ryman premier division for the first time in 2001/02 and enjoyed a memorable season.

The Iron not only finished fourth they also beat title chasing Canvey Island in the final match of the season, a result which played a large part in frustrating Canvey's promotion hopes.

Originally known as Manor Works FC the club went through several name changes and were known as Crittall Athletic and Braintree and Crittall Athletic before finally settling on Braintree FC in 1980.

The club has played in a number of leagues in its history including the Beazer Homes League, Eastern Counties League (champions 1936/3, 1983/84 and

1984/85) and the Essex & Suffolk Border League (champions 1959/60 and 1984/85).

The Iron also enjoyed a fine run in the FA Trophy in 2001/02 reaching the fifth round before finally falling to the Nationwide Conference side Margate.

Silverware in the club's trophy cupboard includes the Essex Senior Cup (1995/96) and the Eastern Floodlight Cup (1985/86 and 1996/97).

Braintree Town play at Cressing Road, Clockhouse Way, Braintree. Tel: 01376 345617
