East Thurrock United 2 Wingate & Finchley 0

Ryman League Division One (North)

Wingate's patchy form continued with a poor performance at East Thurrock on Saturday.

The home side took the lead after 20 minutes, when Andy Walker's poor goal kick fell to Billy Cove, whose first-time shot, helped by the wind, whistled over the despairing keeper.

Paul Hakim shot straight at Thurrock keeper Mark Hardingham minutes later, and the hosts thought they had increased their lead when Dean O'Neill cleared the ball off a post.

With the wind behind them in the second half, Wingate should have created more chances, but could not break down a packed Thurrock defence.

Eight minutes before the end, Lee Burns made it two after a swift counter-attack, to seal the victory for the hosts.

WINGATE & FINCHLEY: Walker, Nielsen (Nyman 75), Haswell (Liebmann 48), Morris, Hemmerdinger, Shafer, O'Neill, Sloma, Hakim, Boateng, Butterfield (Williams 66). Subs not used: Berg, Perfect.
