MP calls for coastal off-shore airport optionBUILDING a new hub airport in the Thames Gateway could bring major regeneration benefits to that part of the south east, according to Bishop's Stortford MP Mark Prisk. He is lobbying the Government to consider building a coastal or off-shore airport in the Thames area in favour of further expansion at Stansted, as it would help rebalance the regional economy. He believes this option would unlock the area's potential and bring about major benefits, including creating more jobs, improving transport links with London and Europe, building affordable housing for key workers, and minimising noise pollution. "I genuinely believe a hub airport at Stansted would not only be to the detriment of East Hertfordshire, but would also be the wrong decision for the nation and the aviation industry," he said. "If the Government makes the right decision on airport policy, it will have in its grasp a powerful tool, one which could transform the poorest part of the south east, create a modern transport network, and improve the lives of everyone in the south east. 13:22 Wednesday 20th November 2002
