Airport plan "act of vandalism"

CAMPAIGNERS against further runways at Stansted Airport have made their formal response to the Government's consultation saying it would be an "act of vandalism" to increase activity at the west Essex airport.

The Stop Stansted Expansion group has produced a 74-page document outlining its opposition to further development at the airport as well as at other sites under threat from the Department for Transport's plans.

The report attacks aspects of the Government's aviation expansion policy and raises concerns over the impact of noise and air pollution, urbanisation, the lack of investment in the road and rail networks, and problems with air traffic control.

The group hopes the response will make clear to Transport Secretary Alistair Darling the implications for the countryside, local heritage, health and general well-being of the region.

Campaign chairman Norman Mead said: "We believe it's vital that the Government and those who can influence them, including local people and politicians, have a ready grasp of both what is at stake and the arguments which can be used to persuade the Government to do the right thing.

"This document sets out clearly and simply where we are in our thinking and will be invaluable in guiding our media and lobbying activity over the coming months before we make our formal submission."
