By Guardian reporter GREEN-fingered pupils at Thomas Willingale School, Loughton, got digging and planting as they took part in National School Grounds Weeks.
Every pupil at the school in the Broadway was asked to take in something to use in one of its many gardens during the national initiative.
Headteacher Marion Smith said: "It was a week-long activity where everybody is supposed to improve their school gardens in one way or another. We have lots of different gardens in the grounds so every child brought in something to improve them from sunflowers to petunias.
"Everything now looks beautiful and the children respect the environment far more because they are the ones who did the work."
The gardens have been a feature for the last five years and even helped pupils score a 98 per cent average in last year's science SATs.
Mrs Smith said: "It's a very good educational experience for the pupils and that's reflected in their SATs science scores last year, plus it has improved the school grounds."
