Students hit the bottle

By Guardian reporter

A CLASS of students are learning how to tell their Sauvignon from their Chardonnay with a six-week course in Wine Appreciation at Epping Forest College, Loughton.

The course, run by a professional chef and wine expert, attracted a large number of students, all eager to learn more about their favourite tipple. The tutor told how wine is all about personal taste and encouraged pupils to look at the colour, smell and then taste of the wine.

He claimed most people buy a wine because they recognised the name or the grape, but that there was much more to finding a wine that suits your own palate.

Over the next five weeks the classes will look at different wine regions, and discover how differences in climate, terrain and grape affect the taste and boquet of the wine.

For anyone who would like to learn how to cook a variety of different foods to accompany a newly acquired knowledge of wine, the tutor will be running one-day courses on Saturdays on how to cook cuisines from around the world, including Spanish, Greek, Italian and Japanese.

For more details, ring the college's information centre on 020 8502 8778.
