Burglar ties up 84-year-old woman in robbery

A BURGLAR wearing socks on his hands tied up an elderly woman with cable on Friday and stole nearly 40 in cash from her home in Seymour Road, Leyton.

The 84-year-old was walking home when she noticed a local man she recognised. Ten minutes later there was a knock on her door and, thinking it was the same man, she opened it without checking.

A stranger wearing socks on his hands forced his way in, at which point she started screaming. He threatened to kill her and pushed her to the floor, demanding she show him where her money was kept.

The terrified pensioner took him into the kitchen and showed him her purse, from which he took 10. In her bedroom he found 15 and a further 12 in a wardrobe.

He tied up her legs using cable from an iron, but she managed to untie herself and called her brother and the police.

They are looking for a white man, 5ft 11ins, carrying a navy blue rucksack. He was wearing a long-sleeve polo and dark trousers or jeans. He had dark brown cropped hair, and a deep London voice.

People with information about the crime, which took place between 6.30pm and 6.50pm, are asked to call Leyton police on 8529 8666.
