The techno games are well underway for a group of youngsters and their families. They are taking part in sessions, based on the BBC television series Robot Wars, at Beths Grammar School, in Hartford Road, Bexley Village.

To whet their appetites, one of the guests was Gareth Dean, who has already taken part in a televised series of Robot Wars with his robot Hurricane, which he built himself and brought with him.

The event is being run by Malcolm Perry, head of technology at the school, who thought it was something families with children aged between nine and 14 could do together and stop them from watching television. Twenty-two families are taking part.

The project has been put together by the Department for Education and Skills working with the BBC, which has provided kits for those taking part to work on.

The idea is to eventually build a robot over a period of months.
