Centre Court tirade costs Rusedski 1,500

Greg Rusedski could have been fined up to 6,000 for his tirade

By Guardian Reporter

Greg Rusedski has been fined 1500 for a centre court outburst during yesterday's tense match against American Andy Roddick.

The British number two's Wimbledon hopes were dashed when a shout from the crowd broke his composure during the match.

Rusedski was ahead in the third set, having lost the first two, when he heard a shout of 'out' from a spectator - and mistook it for a genuine line call.

Turning away from the court, he did not see Roddick return his shot, and lost the point.

At that point Rusedski also lost his cool, and BBC commentators were forced to apologise to viewers after very strong language - from the frustrated Rusedski to the chair umpire - was broadcast live on air.

Rusedski was unable to regain his composure, and he went on to lose the set, and the match, to the fifth seed: 7-6 7-6 7-5.

The contest had been billed as a clash between the two fastest serves in tennis.

Rusedski could have been fined up to 6,000 for his outburst of expletives on court.
